Mining magnate Gina Rinehart has claimed the title of Australia’s richest person, while Bill Gates remains world’s number one in the Forbes’ annual rich list.
Rinehart, who’s heading mining company Hancock Prospecting, stands at number 69 with $US15 billion worth, almost doubling from last year’s $US8.8 billion when she was at 127.
“The biggest piece of her fortune comes from Hope Downs, a joint venture mine she has with Rio Tinto,” Forbes wrote. “Unlike all the other women ahead of her, Ms Rinehart also has bragging rights for actively building her fortune… Rinehart took her late father’s bankrupted estate and rebuilt it into something much larger.”
A total of 33 Australians made the list, including newcomer Manny Stul, CEO of Moose Toys with an estimated fortune of $US1.4 billion.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates tops the list for the fourth consecutive year with $US86 billion, whereas Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg rises to the 5th spot with $US11.4 billion. US President Donald Trump’s position slipped to number 554 this year with an estimated worth of $3.5 billion.
